Feed calculator

Knowing the optimal quantity of feed to provide is not only necessary for fulfilling the nutritional needs of African catfish; it also helps prevent under- or overfeeding and any corresponding issues, including suppressed growth, stress and the deterioration of water quality. The calculator below allows producers to calculate the optimal quantity of feed they should offer based on the known number of fish on their fish farms. This calculator also determines the kilograms of feed needed for the fish to be able to grow properly to the next stage within the indicated number of feeding days. This feeding table is based on optimal water-quality parameters and a water temperature of 26–28°C.

Feeding times

  • Feed till satiation on regular intervals - e.g. 6 times per day, between 07.00 hr (sunrise) until 19.00 hr (sunset) for the smaller sized fish.
  • Feed around 12 hr/day on regular intervals of 4 times per day for 12 - 50 grams fish. From 50 grams onwards, this is ideally 2-4 times of feeding per day.
  • Feeding up to 20 hr per day is possible. However, when dark it is very important to carefully check feed uptake to prevent spillage and deterioration of the water quality.
